Camping this summer? Make it an earth-friendly expedition!

Camping is a great way to spend some time away from the city; reconnecting with nature and friends without a hefty price tag. Camping may seem like an eco-friendly activity itself, but not all campers leave behind an eco-friendly footprint. Before you pack your bags and your tent for your next camping trip, remember these 4 handy tips to make your camping trip earth-friendly!

1. Buy used gear

It may be tempting to convince yourself that you absolutely NEED that six person “Multi Strap Double Room Padded Floor Luxury Glamping Tent” for you and your friend going bush for two nights. Likelihood is – you don’t! Buying new gear really costs the environment when there is so much great second hand gear out there. Try borrowing from a friend, checking out Gumtree or other online listings and social media swapping groups. Great for the environment and your wallet!

2. Leave the technology at home

The whole reason your camping is to experience nature, right? Well, you can probably leave Netflix behind and get back to that Stranger Things binge come Monday. Substitute your laptop in exchange for a good book. Put your phone on aeroplane mode to save battery just in case, and kick back and relax to the sounds of nature. Don’t forget a torch though!

3. Camp nearby

You may think that to have a true camping trip you have to drive as far as possible into the unknown until there’s not another soul in site. No matter what city you live in, there are usually beautiful and private camping spots just a stone’s throw away. Save yourself and the environment the long drive by looking up camping spots, then you can spend the most amount of time enjoying the great outdoors. Websites such as Find A Camp are a good place to start.

4. STEP AWAY FROM THE PLASTIC SECTION!

Okay, this one we had to write in CAPS LOCK. It is extremely tempting to bring plastic, single use versions of cups, plates and cutlery for convenience, but it is also tremendously detrimental for the environment. “But I don’t want to use dirty cutlery?!” we hear you say. Well, a super easy solution is to bring one of each thing you will need and a small bucket with some soap and a dishtowel. It only takes a few minutes to wash your kitchenware and you will sleep better knowing you’re not polluting the grounds you’re sleeping in. Another solution is to look for items made from sustainable materials like corn starch, rice husk, bamboo fibre, palm leaf, sugarcane and wheat straw that are biodegradable.

If you need to bring cleaning liquids with you, Aware Environment’s products are sourced from naturally derived ingredients and won’t harm the environment.

So, there you have it. You can be in touch with nature without harming the environment in the process. Do you have any eco-friendly camping tips to share? We’d love to hear them!
